Two women and a bike


Vicki
This bike journey started way before my 1st pedal stroke. As a matter of fact, it started 3 months ago when Vicki from Tennessee asked me via FB if I would be interested in cycling the Southern Tier with her. I love biking and I love adventure thus making this an easy decision.

A bit about Vicki:

Vicki is usually on the bike beside her husband David.  Life can change quickly  and it did for this couple - Since his passing  in 2021  (from a long illness) he is so very missed by all - every day❤️   He and Vicki loved biking.

Riding the  U.S. Southern Tier was a dream of David and Vicki’s!
After many months of preparation- physically- emotionally and mentally - Vicki will begin this journey today - 
We will take her to board Amtrak and after a few days of travel to San Francisco - her ride begins in Northern Ca.  And will eventually wind up to the Eastern Coast of Fla.!!!   Many detours and change of plans may  arise due to the extreme weather-(rain and snow) in California.

The Planning:

It didn't take long before the planning started because "An hour of planning can save you 10 hours of doing" (Dale Carnegie).

At the time that Vicki approached me, I was still in California with my daughter Rachel. Perfect timing as I could leave my bike and most of my gear there or so I thought. The Southern Tier, however, starts in San Diego meaning I have to travel from San Fran to San Diego. "No problem" said Vicki, "I will travel to San Fran and we will start our journey from there". How wonderful!

In the meantime I traveled back home to Canada. I have studied maps, routes, and places to stay for the night. The "to do" list became a lengthy one, bags packed, unpacked and re-packed while more items needed to be removed. But I think I am ready....


And then my bike. But I will tell you all about her in my next post😊

June 6, 2023 For the past 5 weeks I have been resting and digesting the last 2.5 months. I edited my blog and made it in a book. My book, my adventure and my riding. Can not wait to get it in my hands. Tomorrow, June 7th I fly from Toronto to Amsterdam to start my next cycling adventure. Solo from Reahus Holland to Hirtshals Denmark from where I will take a ferry to Bergen Norway. 900 km. In Bergen my friend Odd Martin will meet me. So stay tuned.

Goodbye New Mexico, hello Texas

Wednesday March 29. Day 25. Radium Spring to West El Paso. 53 miles or 85 km. It was freezing cold overnight and when we woke up it was once again 3 degrees below zero. I could see my breath and my fingers became numb during packing. Vicki was ready before me and Debbie and John, the home owners, called here inside. I quickly finished and when I walked into their home a roaring fire awaited me. Vicki and I sat in front of the fire warming our cold hands while my heart was filled with warmth. My final blog

Wednesday May 3rd. Buffalo to home. The Amtrak train from New York to Buffalo was on time. The train was only half full so lots of space. There was no cafeteria car so no coffee. Yet at some point we had a fresh air break for 30 minutes and there was a coffeeshop. Happy for this opportunity. The rest of the ride went fairly smooth with the exception of the engine shutting down twice.  We arrived in Buffalo around 12.30 am and we're told to wait till a new crew came on board which took some time. Finally we were allowed to disembark but I had to wait for my bike. I was wearing my shorts (hadn't thought that far in advance) and nearly froze. Rain, hail and strong wind! This is Buffalo. Harry and Jack were waiting for me. Jack was so happy to see me. Lots of licks and curling up on my lap. Yes Jack I missed you as well.  At 3 am we were home.
